Not all storage units come with temperature control, but that doesn’t mean your stuff has to suffer.
At Stand-Up Storage, most of our units are non-climate controlled, and our customers store everything from furniture to family keepsakes. With just a little prep, you can make sure your things stay in great shape.
Here’s how to do it.
Go for plastic bins with tight-fitting lids instead of cardboard boxes. They keep moisture out and last longer.
Wrap fragile or temperature-sensitive items in bubble wrap or moving blankets.
Skip garbage bags for long-term storage. They trap moisture and can lead to mold.
Use pallets, moving blankets, or even flattened cardboard to create a buffer between your items and the floor.
This helps avoid contact with cold concrete in winter or minor water leaks.
Toss in moisture absorbers, silica gel packs, or even a small bucket of charcoal.
These help regulate humidity, especially during spring and summer.
Candles, vinyl records, food, electronics, and anything that can melt or freeze easily.
If it’s sensitive to heat or cold, consider keeping it at home or asking us for alternate options.
Don’t pack your unit wall to wall. Leave small gaps between boxes and furniture.
Good airflow can prevent musty smells and trapped moisture.
Even with good prep, it’s smart to open up the unit once in a while.
Look for any early signs of moisture or shifting and make adjustments.
Non-climate controlled storage doesn’t have to mean risk. With a little planning, your items can stay clean, dry, and damage-free.
